Contents of this bassoon reed making kit

Reed Knife

used to scrape the reed and cut the cane

Bassoon Mandrel

used to form the bassoon reed & provides stability when working on reeds

Bassoon Plaque

placed in between the blades of a reed whilst scraping to reduce the risk of the reed splitting and to provide stability when editing reeds

Reed Making Pliers

used to help form the reed, adjust the wires and change the shape of the throat of the bassoon reed. These come with a griping part, a flat part and wire cutters.

Bassoon Reed Reamer

has three highly sharpened spiral blades to remove cane from the inside of the bassoon reed. The spiral shape helps to keep the bottom of the bassoon reed very round

Bassoon Reed Wire

10 meters of 0.6mm wire. Used to hold the reed together. This special blend of metals ensures that the wire is not too malleable or brittle to allow the reed to vibrate correctly

Bassoon Reed Thread

used to wrap the bottom of the bassoon reed to create the 'knot' which helps to keep the reed stable and increase airtightness. The thread colour is picked at random.

Gouged, Shaped & Profiled Bassoon Cane

the cane (Arundo Donax) that bassoon reeds are made from. This cane has been part processed to enable you to efficiently learn the art of reed making

There were a few missing

There were a few missing ingredients, but once I got those, my first reed actually sounded pretty decent. My dad said that it was the best he’s ever heard me play.

Excellent kit

I bought this reed making kit as a beginner bassoonist and complete novice reed maker. It's good value for money and I've used every part of the kit, so definitely better than buying the individual parts. You'll also need a few odds and ends, but all the main tools are here. You'll probably need a separate pair of wire clippers. The pliers in the set are nice and fine for the delicate work, but the clippers on them struggle to get through the wire. I'm already playing using my own homemade reeds, so this kit has worked out well.

Great stuff

Fantastic prices for a great range of equipment. Great for a young bassoonist who isn't studying music and who plays as a hobby.

Hi Samuel, thanks for your review. How do you think we could improve this kit so that you'd be willing to give it 5 stars? Many thanks, Matthew | Bassoon Specialist @ Crook and Staple
